Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): How to Get Your Business Cited by AI Search
ChatGPT is answering your customers. Are you in the answer?

A few years ago, a potential customer typed "web developer for small business" into Google and scanned ten blue links. Today, the same person often asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Mode and gets one written answer with a handful of recommended sources.
If your business is named in that answer, you get the visit, the call, or the quote request. If it isn't, you are invisible, even if you rank on page one. That shift has a name: generative engine optimization, or GEO. In this guide, we explain what it is, what actually works, and seven steps you can apply to your website this month.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization is the practice of structuring your content, brand information, and technical setup so AI answer engines can find, understand, and cite you. The "engines" include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
You will also see it called AEO (answer engine optimization), AI SEO, or LLMO. The industry has not settled on one term, but the goal is identical: when someone asks an AI a question in your field, your business is part of the answer.
There is one important difference from classic SEO. In Google's blue links, you chase a position between 1 and 10. In an AI answer, there is no position. You are either cited, or you are not, and visibility depends on how often and how accurately AI systems reference you.
Why GEO Matters for Small Businesses Right Now
AI answers are pushing the click further away from the results page. An Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords found that the first organic result gets about 34.5% fewer clicks when an AI Overview appears on the same page. Even a strong ranking is worth less than it used to be.
At the same time, the people who do click through from AI answers tend to arrive better informed. Google says visits that come from AI features are of higher quality than clicks from traditional results. Fewer visitors who already trust the recommendation can be worth more than a crowd of casual browsers.
There is also a fragmentation problem. A 2026 analysis reported by Omnibound found that only 11% of the domains cited by ChatGPT were also cited by Perplexity. Winning in one engine doesn't guarantee success in the others.
GEO vs SEO: What Actually Changes
Here is the good news. Google's own documentation on AI features and your website states that no additional requirements or special optimizations are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The fundamentals of SEO still apply: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
